Sage's Story

Sage is a bright, loving, and compassionate five-year-old boy who has been fighting an incredibly tough battle against acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) at MUSC in Charleston. He was diagnosed with ALL in February 2024, when he was just four years old, and since that day, everything in our lives has changed. The diagnosis still feels surreal to me—like I’m waiting for this nightmare to end and for things to go back to normal, but they haven’t, and I’m struggling to fully accept this as our new reality.

Due to his illness, Sage had to leave the preschool where he had made many friends. Since then, he has been largely isolated, spending most of his time either at home or in the hospital. No playground visits, no family gatherings, and no playing with friends. He wears a mask at all times to protect his weakened immune system. Sage has learned so many medical terms related to his treatment and cancer that no child his age should ever have to know. His body has undergone so many painful changes, enduring treatments and side effects no child should face. But despite all of this, he has been an absolute fighter—his strength, courage, and resilience constantly inspire me to stay strong for him.

Still, there are moments of deep worry. Sage, for instance, has asked if he can grow his hair really long to "stop the chemo from making it fall out," as it did after his first two rounds of treatment. His innocence and understanding of what's happening to him are heartbreaking, but he continues to press forward with a spirit that shines bright.

Holidays, in particular, have been tough for him. It's difficult to explain why he can't join in the typical holiday celebrations that other kids get to enjoy—playing with friends, going to parties, or even just running around outside. Though I want Sage to understand that holidays are about more than just gifts, the truth is that, at the end of the day, he's still just a five-year-old boy who believes in Santa Claus and looks forward to the magic of Christmas.

That’s why this year, more than ever, I’m hoping for support to help bring some light to his life. Any assistance to make this Christmas a special one for Sage would mean the world to us. I want him to feel the love and joy he so deeply deserves, even in the midst of all this hardship. Thank you for your kindness and any help you can offer in making his holiday season a little brighter.
