Kaylee's Story

Our oldest daughter, Anastasia “Stasia” Fulghum, was diagnosed with B-ALL leukemia on February 22, 2022. Today, we are thrilled to share that Stasia is in remission! She rang the bell on June 28, 2024, marking the end of her treatment, and had her port removed on October 8, 2024.

This journey has been long and challenging, and while ringing the bell felt like a victory, we quickly realized that returning to “normal” life would take more time and patience. Stasia's recovery isn’t as simple as it may seem. Her lab results show that her body is still healing, which is part of the reason for the delay in removing her port. She continues to battle low energy levels, and joint pain from the chemo still lingers. Additionally, she’s dealing with skin issues, likely a result of what doctors call “chemo withdrawal.”

Through it all, Stasia remains surrounded by the love and support of her family and friends. We remind her often that her body underwent 2 ½ years of intensive chemotherapy, and full recovery will take months. Staying positive and patient is key, and though the physical recovery takes time, her spirit is stronger than ever.

This experience has been incredibly difficult for our family, but it’s also made us all grow in ways we never expected. Our five children have come through this journey with an even greater sense of empathy and compassion for others, especially for those facing cancer or disabilities. Stasia, in particular, has used her experience to give back. She started a fundraiser at her high school called "Cancer Sucks," where she and her friends sell lollipops to raise money for toys that are donated to our local Children’s Hospital. Every one of our kids participates in this, helping to spread love and kindness to those in need.

While cancer drained our savings and put a strain on our finances, it also brought our family closer together, teaching us the true value of love, resilience, and understanding. We’re incredibly proud of Stasia and all of our children for the compassion and strength they’ve shown through this journey. It’s a reminder that, even in the hardest times, there is always room for growth, hope, and giving back.
