Ella Gourlay

It all began on August 5th when we took Ella to her pediatrician, concerned about the bruises and frequent headaches she had been experiencing. As parents, we trusted our instincts and asked for a CBC, hoping the results would show something simple like low iron. But instead, the diagnosis was something we never could have prepared for: Leukemia.

On August 6th, we received the call from our pediatrician, telling us to head straight to the nearest children's hospital. It was there that we learned Ella had been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Our world was turned upside down in an instant.

We were told that each round of chemotherapy would require Ella to be hospitalized for 4-6 weeks, with only a few days at home between treatments. The hardest part of this journey so far has been the separation. Damian and I are alternating nights with Ella, trying to stay close to her while our other children—Noah (8), Mattilyn (6), and DJ (3)—are at home, missing their big sister. It’s heartbreaking to watch them struggle with the distance.

As the holidays approach, we face the harsh reality that we may not be able to celebrate Christmas as a family this year. Christmas has always been our favorite time of year, and the thought of being apart, especially when times are already so tough, weighs heavily on our hearts.
