Selena Flaherty Story - Selena passed on October 13, 2010
Selena was one of two children. Selena had one brother, Chris, which also has been affected by Selena’s struggle with cancer. Please read Selena’s story below:
Selena was having very bad headaches and was diagnosed on Oct 23,2009 with a non cancerous low grade glioma (brain tumor), At the time, I was told that she would be fine, we nothing to worry about. Selena's continued to have bad headaches, the doctors adjusted her shunt several times until Dec when her eye started closing and she couldn't open it, at that time they told us she had a high grade Glioma and it was Cancer, additionally we were told she would not be able to see out of her eye again because the tumor had wrapped around the nerves causing permanent damage. Our world changed forever! Selena began intensive treatment. We had to go to MUSC every Wed for Chemo and once a month she had to go into the hospital for 3 to 5 days. After 3 months we had a MRI done only to find that the chemo had not done anything so they did another 3 months of chemo, again another MRI no improvement, at this time the doctors decided to do radiation this was done in Mt Pleasant 5 days a week for 6 weeks a total of 33 treatments, along with oral chemo. I can't tell you how many times Selena has been in the hospital but it's been a lot, this has been very hard on the whole family, My mother who is a cancer survivor came here from FL to help me with Selena while she was doing her radiation. The doctors told me this summer there is no cure for Selena because of the location of her tumor, and it is inoperable. Selena’s medication along with months of steroids, has caused her to gain over 80lbs in the last 6 months! Selena is only 10 years old, and suffered more than most adults in their lifetime.
We are now waiting for Sept 27 to have a MRI to see if radiation has help. I just wanted to add that this tumor has caused a lot of pain to Selena, physically and mentally, she has a head ache about every 4 hours 7 days a week. This has changed the way she looks and lives; this has changed all of us. We live for her we love her. NO child deserves to go through what she is going through.
Selena has a 14 year old brother Christopher and lost her brother Justin 6 years ago to a hit and run. He was 14 at the time. Selena is the kindest hearted little girl with an amazing faith in God, it is to hard to explain you would just have to meet her. Selena is an old soul in a young body.
