our kids

Claire is Donald's little sister. Claire is all girl and is 2 years old.

Donald was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on June 5th, 2019, while we were stationed overseas in Germany with the U.S. Air Force. We spent 10 days in the German children’s hospital, stabilizing Donald, and preparing for transfer. On June 13th our whole family was sent on an emergency medical evacuation flight with several wounded soldiers. Our daughter, Claire, was just a year old at the time.

We were temporarily sent to Walter Reed National Hospital where Donald received his first two months of chemotherapy. During that time Donald suffered additional side effects and spent a while recovering in the ICU. Unfortunately, Donald didn’t go into remission as planned and all of his chemotherapy had to be increased and lengthened. Finally, we were able to transfer to our permanent home, Charleston. Two months after treatment in Charleston, Donald went into remission and there was no more evidence of leukemia cells in his body!

Since then Donald has been through several months of treatment and he reached Maintenance in May 2020. The whirlwind of several moves, long hospital stays, and cancer has been a spiral of financial and emotional stress on our entire family. Thankfully, we have found organizations that are always willing to lend a hand and friends going through the same thing, so we have found some relief. It would be an incredible relief to have help with Christmas presents for both Donald and Claire, as finances have remained so tight during this time. Thank you so much for doing this for these sweet, resilient children. A moment of joy goes a long way in this journey.
